Why did the Scientific Revolution happen in early modern Europe and not in Song Dynasty China, Abbasid Baghdad, or Gupta India? Standard historiographies identify background conditions — literacy, patronage, philosophical traditions — but leave three puzzles unresolved: what triggered the initial escalation, what made early efforts durable, and why natural philosophy specifically rather than theology, law, or classical scholarship.
Sticker proposes a two-level causal account. At the individual level, three mechanisms: activation (experiencing inherited puzzles as psychologically intolerable), capture (cognitive, material, and social entanglements that stabilize inquiry), and externalization (converting methods into transmissible forms). At the institutional level, three more: role expansion (embedding elevated standards into positions), succession ratchets (competitive selection preventing regression), and domain channeling (directing institutional energy toward specific fields).
Each mechanism existed independently in Islamic, Chinese, and European contexts. None was sufficient alone. The Scientific Revolution occurred when all six aligned simultaneously — at Padua-Venice and Oxford-London, where corporate autonomy, competitive appointments, and state patronage converged with investigative practices.
The Galileo case is decisive. His activation was domain-specific: he transformed mechanics and astronomy while remaining conventional in optics and magnetism. This demonstrates that activation is a specific mechanism, not a stable personality trait. The same person can be revolutionary in one domain and ordinary in another.
The structural point: the Scientific Revolution was not caused by a factor. It was caused by an alignment. Each component — psychological drive, institutional ratchets, competitive selection, state patronage — was individually common across civilizations. What was rare was their simultaneous convergence. The question is not “what was special about Europe?” but “what alignment occurred only there?”
