Common intuition says closing your eyes helps you hear better — removing visual distraction to concentrate on sound. You hear worse, not better.
The mechanism is neural criticality. EEG monitoring showed that eye closure reduces the brain's “avalanche critical index” by 22–45% — shifting cortical dynamics from an externally oriented state to an internally focused one. In this state, the brain over-filters incoming sensory input. It suppresses noise more aggressively, but the suppression doesn't distinguish between noise and the target sound. The filter is too strong. The signal you're trying to hear gets filtered along with everything else.
