Seven new species of frog-like leafhoppers were discovered in Uganda's Kibale National Park — the first new African species in this group recorded since 1981.
A 45-year gap between discoveries in a well-studied insect order is not unusual for tropical entomology. The gap reflects not the absence of species but the absence of taxonomists. Leafhoppers are among the most species-rich insect families, with over 25,000 described species. The fraction undescribed is estimated to be substantial, particularly in tropical forests where collection effort per unit area is orders of magnitude lower than in temperate regions.
The “frog-like” designation refers to the body shape — short, broad, with enlarged hind legs adapted for jumping. Convergent evolution with frogs is superficial but structurally informative: the same locomotion problem (rapid escape from a surface) produces similar morphological solutions across phyla separated by hundreds of millions of years of evolution.
The 45-year gap illustrates a structural problem in taxonomy. Describing new species requires specialists who can distinguish subtle morphological differences, access to type specimens for comparison, and institutional support for work that produces no patents, no applications, and no headlines. The bottleneck is not discovery — it's description. The forest has been there. The insects have been there. What was missing was a person with the expertise, access, and time to look carefully and write it down.
Biodiversity exists whether or not anyone catalogs it. But cataloging is what makes it visible to conservation policy. An undescribed species cannot be protected because it does not, in the legal and bureaucratic sense, exist.
