A seventy-five-percent-complete rhinoceros skeleton was excavated from Devon Island in the Canadian High Arctic. It belonged to a previously unknown species, Epiatheracerium itjilik — small, lightly built, and hornless — that lived approximately twenty-three million years ago during the Early Miocene.
The location is the problem. This genus, Epiatheracerium, was previously known only from Europe. Finding it in the Canadian Arctic implies that rhinos migrated between North America and Europe through Greenland, using the North Atlantic Land Bridge. But that bridge was thought to have closed around fifty-six million years ago — thirty-three million years before this animal lived.
Either the bridge stayed open far longer than the geological consensus allowed, or it reopened. The fossil doesn't tell you which, but it tells you the connection existed. The animal is the evidence that the route was passable, regardless of whether anyone had identified the road.
The structural insight is about absence evidence. The two-continent separation of the genus was interpreted as proof that no connection existed after the Eocene. But the separation was actually an artifact of where we had looked. Nobody had excavated systematically in the High Arctic Miocene. The fossil record isn't a census — it's a sample, and the sample was geographically biased toward temperate latitudes.
The name reflects this: itjilik means “frosty” in Inuktitut. A rhinoceros named in an Arctic indigenous language, found in permafrost-bound rock, seventy-five percent intact. The bones are three-dimensionally preserved with only partial mineral replacement — exceptional for twenty-three million years. Even the proteins in the tooth enamel survived.
The land bridge was there. The rhinos crossed it. The only thing missing was someone digging in the right place.
