The Hidden Seven

Alpha Crucis, the brightest star in the Southern Cross, was known as a multiple system. How many components depends on when you looked and with what instrument. The latest count is seven.

Archival interferometric data reveal previously unknown close binary companions in both the primary and secondary components (arXiv:2603.11194). What was thought to be a four-or-five-star system is actually seven stars — the newly discovered companion Bb has a probable orbital period of 405 days and was hiding in the glare of its brighter partner.

The discovery comes with a geometric surprise. The mutual inclination between orbital planes is roughly 50 or 137 degrees — far from aligned. In a system formed from a single collapsing cloud, orbital planes should be roughly coplanar. The misalignment suggests dynamical formation processes — gravitational interactions that tilted the orbits after formation, or capture events that brought components together from different orientations.

The observational implication is sobering. Alpha Crucis is the closest very-high-multiplicity massive star system to the Sun. If seven components can hide in a system this well-studied and this nearby, then companion frequencies in massive-star surveys at greater distances are systematically underestimated. The companions are there; the instruments and observations haven't been sufficient to find them.

Multiplicity is not a property of the star. It is a property of the measurement. The star doesn't change when we find another component. What changes is what we thought we knew.
