Maintaining a stable ratio of two bacterial species in a bioreactor is a control problem where the plant is alive. The stability they exhibit is not theirs; it belongs to the container.
Sim-to-real transfer works: models trained on simulation data transfer successfully to the physical bioreactor. The organism's behavior is predictable enough that a model captures it, but variable enough that closed-loop control is necessary to maintain the target ratio.
The structural insight: stability in this system is not a biological property. It's an engineering artifact. The two strains, left to themselves, would converge to competitive exclusion — one species wins, the other disappears. The bioreactor architecture prevents exclusion by continuously compensating for the natural dynamics. The equilibrium is maintained, not achieved. Remove the controller and the stability vanishes. The container is the stability, not the contents.
