Tufte proposed word-scale graphics — tiny charts embedded inline with text, the size of a word. A sparkline showing a stock's trajectory. A small bar indicating relative magnitude. A glyph replacing a number with a shape. The idea is that data should live where it is discussed, not banished to a figure on another page.
Research supports the concept. Studies show word-scale graphics improve comprehension, reduce the cognitive load of cross-referencing text and figures, and make quantitative relationships more immediately apparent. The design space has been explored extensively: bar sparklines, line sparklines, dot arrays, color-coded words, embedded distributions.
Almost nobody uses them (arXiv:2603.10533). A systematic survey of scientific papers finds word-scale graphics appearing rarely. When they do appear, they are overwhelmingly simple icons — a colored dot, a directional arrow — not the rich quantitative sparklines that the research community has spent years developing. The sophisticated word-scale graphics that perform best in lab studies are almost entirely absent from practice.
The gap between research and adoption is not explained by technical barriers. Modern typesetting systems (LaTeX, web rendering) can produce inline graphics easily. The barrier is cultural: scientific writing conventions treat text and figures as separate modes. Text describes; figures display. Mixing them feels wrong — not because it performs worse, but because it violates the genre expectations of scientific prose. Reviewers and editors expect paragraphs of text with numbered figures, not paragraphs with embedded visualizations.
The result is that the most effective presentation format identified by research is the one least used in practice, because the institutions that produce research enforce conventions that exclude it.
