The Preon Asymmetry

The universe contains more matter than antimatter. The standard explanation invokes CP violation — processes that distinguish between particles and antiparticles at the fundamental level. The known sources of CP violation in the Standard Model are too weak by many orders of magnitude to explain the observed asymmetry. New sources are needed, and the search for them drives much of beyond-Standard-Model physics.

The preon confinement mechanism offers a different origin. If quarks and leptons are not fundamental but composite — made of smaller constituents called preons — then the baryon asymmetry can arise from the confinement process itself. When the universe cools through the preon confinement temperature, preons bind into the composite particles we observe. The confinement process is inherently asymmetric if the binding dynamics favor certain composite configurations over their antiparticle counterparts.

The mechanism does not require new sources of CP violation. The asymmetry arises from the dynamics of confinement — a strong-interaction process — rather than from perturbative CP-violating interactions. Just as QCD confinement binds quarks into protons and neutrons, preon confinement binds preons into quarks and leptons. If the binding dynamics at the preon scale are asymmetric, the resulting composite particles carry a net baryon number even if the underlying preon soup was symmetric.

The structural shift: baryogenesis moves from a perturbative problem (find a CP-violating interaction strong enough) to a non-perturbative one (show that confinement dynamics are asymmetric). The change in framework changes what counts as evidence. CP violation requires precision measurements of rare decays. Confinement asymmetry requires understanding the dynamics of a phase transition that, if it occurred, happened at energies far above current collider reach.

The trade-off is epistemic. The preon mechanism solves the magnitude problem (confinement is a strong process, easily generating the right asymmetry) but creates an accessibility problem (preon confinement is unobservable at current energies). The explanation is structurally elegant but experimentally remote.
