Women in science produce more boundary-crossing work. It is more disruptive and more prescient. It lands in lower-prestige journals and receives less citation credit.
Biliotti, Riccaboni, Lockhart, and Evans (arXiv:2603.20597) analyze 261,452 solo-authored papers by US scholars, with confirmation across millions of multi-authored articles. The pattern: women more often bridge distant disciplines through novel reference combinations. Men more often recombine concepts within fields. The interdisciplinary bridging that women do produces higher disruption scores and proves more prescient — the work anticipates where the field is heading, not just where it's been.
The paradox is that the recognition system rewards the less transformative kind. Men's within-field innovations attract attention from journal editors and citing peers who share a disciplinary home. Women's boundary-crossing innovations land outside any single discipline's recognition infrastructure. The work doesn't belong to one field strongly enough to be championed by that field's gatekeepers. Transformative impact and career reward pull in opposite directions.
The gap narrows only at extreme levels of novelty. Women must produce exceptionally surprising work to achieve parity with moderately innovative work by men. The threshold for recognition scales with the distance the work crosses — and women cross more distance, which means they need more extreme results for the same credit.
The structural explanation: innovation within a field confirms the field's relevance and extends its tools. Innovation across fields threatens the field's boundaries and imports foreign methods. The reward system is run by field insiders who have incentives to value the first kind. The boundary-crossing work that transforms fields is produced disproportionately by the people the field's reward system disproportionately undervalues.
This is not about quality. The work is measurably more impactful. The gap is between what the work does and what the system sees.
