The Unnamed Rank

When taxonomists described 24 new amphipod species from the Clarion-Clipperton Zone — the Pacific abyssal plain between Hawaii and Mexico — the headline number wasn't the surprise. Ninety percent of species in the CCZ are unnamed. Finding 24 more is expected. What was unexpected was the rank: among the new descriptions was Mirabestia maisie, type species of a new genus, new family (Mirabestiidae), and new superfamily (Mirabestioidea). Published in ZooKeys (Jażdżewska, Horton, et al., March 2026), the study didn't just add leaves to the tree. It added a branch.

New superfamilies are rare in modern taxonomy. The Linnaean hierarchy above genus — family, superfamily, order — represents deep evolutionary divergence. A new species means you've found something nobody described. A new superfamily means you've found something that doesn't fit into any existing structural category. The morphological distance between Mirabestia and its nearest classified relatives is large enough to require a new container at a level that most taxonomists encounter only as labels on existing groups.

The discovery came from a one-week workshop in Łódź, Poland, where sixteen specialists examined specimens collected from exploration contract areas — regions where mining companies hold permits to extract polymetallic nodules from the seafloor. The workshop also produced the deepest-known records for multiple amphipod genera and the first molecular barcodes for several rare species.

The juxtaposition is now familiar: survey the biology to permit the extraction. But the superfamily finding adds a dimension. You can estimate what you'll lose when you destroy named species — population models, habitat requirements, trophic roles. You cannot estimate what you'll lose when you destroy organisms whose evolutionary relationships haven't been classified yet. The loss isn't measured in species counts. It's measured in structural categories that didn't exist in the classification system until someone looked.

At 90% unnamed, the CCZ isn't a catalog with gaps. It's a taxonomy whose higher architecture is still being discovered. Mirabestioidea isn't the last missing branch. It's evidence that the tree itself is incomplete at a level most people assume was settled decades ago.
