Sperm whales have the largest heads in the animal kingdom — up to a third of their body length, filled with a complex organ called the spermaceti, whose function has been debated for two centuries. One hypothesis: it's a battering ram. Nineteenth-century whalers reported whales ramming ships. Herman Melville built a novel around it. But no one had documented sperm whales headbutting each other. The ramming hypothesis was inference from ship encounters, not observed social behavior.
Researchers from St Andrews, using drone footage collected in the Azores and Balearic islands between 2020 and 2022, captured the first confirmed video of sperm whale headbutting. But the animals doing it weren't who anyone expected. The headbutters were sub-adults — younger, smaller whales. Not the massive adult males with the largest spermaceti organs, who would be the logical candidates if headbutting were serious combat.
Two implications. First, if headbutting is play or practice rather than competition, the enormous head may not be a weapon at all — or at least, weaponry may be a secondary use. The spermaceti organ is the whale's primary acoustic structure, essential for echolocation clicks that can travel kilometers in deep water. Using it as a battering ram risks damaging the equipment the whale depends on for hunting and communication. The risk calculus changes if it's young whales testing limits versus adults fighting for mates.
Second, and more structurally interesting: the observers assumed the behavior would appear in the animals with the most developed apparatus. It appeared instead in the animals still developing. The same logic applies everywhere age and capability are conflated. The organism most likely to test a capacity physically is not the one with the most capacity — it's the one still calibrating what it has.
Nineteenth-century sailors were right that sperm whales headbutt. They were wrong about who does it and probably wrong about why.
